Citizen Trust Remains Nigeria’s Strongest Security Asset Says NOA DG

October 14, 2025

The Director General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has described citizen trust as Nigeria’s most vital security asset, stressing that no security architecture can succeed without public confidence and collaboration.

Speaking at the October National Joint Security Briefing held at the Agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Issa-Onilu commended the country’s security, intelligence, enforcement, and regulatory agencies for maintaining a strong operational tempo throughout September 2025, noting that their efforts had further weakened the capacity of criminal and terrorist groups nationwide. He disclosed that the armed forces conducted 198 military operations during the month, repelling attacks and neutralising 11 ISWAP fighters in Borno and Yobe States.

Providing updates on inter-agency achievements, the NOA DG said the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) recovered ₦446 million and secured restraining orders on an additional ₦173 million pending forfeiture. The Commission also reached over 41,000 Nigerians through preventive education initiatives, including workshops, systems reviews, and targeted digital campaigns.

Issa-Onilu further highlighted that the Nigeria Customs Service generated ₦658.6 billion in September, intercepted arms and surveillance drones in the Southwest, and received commendation from the Airline Operators of Nigeria for its improved public engagement.

On police operations, he revealed that the Nigeria Police Force made 2,547 arrests, dismantled 37 criminal gangs, and recovered 212 firearms, ₦250 million, and 5,000 litres of smuggled fuel.

He also disclosed that a full army brigade had been deployed to Kwara State to intensify efforts against banditry, with the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division relocating to directly oversee operations.

The briefing also featured reports from other key agencies, including the Nigerian Immigration Service, NDLEA, NAFDAC, Correctional Service, and FRSC, among others.

Issa-Onilu commended all security and regulatory agencies for their continued dedication to national safety and lauded the media for promoting responsible reporting and public awareness in support of the fight against insecurity.
