Chris Green Defends Finidi George Amid Super Eagles’ Struggles
Christopher Green, former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) board member, has spoken out in support of Super Eagles head coach Finidi George, asserting that the coach is not to blame for the team’s recent setbacks.
The Super Eagles find themselves in a precarious position in the World Cup qualifiers, having recorded three draws and a loss in their campaign. Currently sitting in fifth place in Group C, the team faces an uphill battle to secure qualification, trailing leaders Rwanda by four points.
In response to the team’s poor performance, the NFF Executive Committee convened an emergency meeting where several resolutions were made, including the consideration of appointing an expatriate Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles in the near future.
However, Green expressed his opposition to the idea of hiring a foreign coach at this time. He emphasized that the appointment of an expatriate coach would not necessarily address the team’s issues and questioned the timing of such a decision.
Green highlighted the challenges faced by Finidi George, who was appointed as head coach less than a month before crucial matches. He argued that expecting immediate results from George under such circumstances was unrealistic and unjust.
Furthermore, Green raised concerns about the potential consequences for the expatriate coach if results do not improve, questioning whether they would face the same scrutiny and dismissal as a local coach.
Looking ahead, the Super Eagles are scheduled to resume their World Cup qualifying campaign in March, facing off against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
