Cholera Outbreak Claims 24 Lives in Lagos: Health Officials Urge Vigilance
The death toll from a cholera outbreak in Lagos State has surged to 24, health authorities confirmed.
As of June 19, 2024, there have been 35 confirmed cases of cholera, with an alarming 417 suspected cases reported across 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state.
According to Professor Akin Abayomi, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health, the latest figures were detailed in the Lagos State Cholera Outbreak Situation Report (EPI Week 25).
The report highlighted significant spikes in cases across several LGAs, notably Ajeromi, Kosofe, Epe, Ikorodu, Alimosho, and Eti-Osa, peaking on June 10, 2024.
“The situation report indicates 417 suspected cases, 35 confirmed cases, and a total of 24 recorded deaths,” stated Prof. Abayomi via his Twitter handle @ProfAkinAbayomi this morning. Graphical representations in the report underscored the widespread nature of the outbreak across the state.
The rise in fatalities has prompted urgent calls from health officials for strict adherence to personal and environmental hygiene practices to curb further spread of the disease.
“It is crucial for Lagosians to maintain high standards of personal hygiene and environmental cleanliness to mitigate the risk of infection,” emphasized Prof. Abayomi.
Earlier announcements by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Mrs. Kemi Ogunyemi, had indicated 21 deaths and 401 suspected cases just a day prior, with hotspots identified in Lagos Island, Kosofe, and Eti Osa LGAs.
