Chess Master Tunde Onakoya Surprises, Wins ‘Force For Social Good’ Award at 2024 Trendupp Awards

July 8, 2024

Guinness World Record-holding chess master Tunde Onakoya claimed the coveted ‘Force For Social Good’ award, surpassing well-known social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, among others.

The Trendupp Awards, renowned for recognizing influencers, content creators, and brands who excel in leveraging social media across diverse platforms, hosted a competitive lineup of nominees this year.

Onakoya gained international attention earlier in the year for setting a new Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, surpassing 58 hours of continuous play in Times Square, New York City.

In stark contrast, VeryDarkMan has carved a niche as a vocal advocate against social injustices, using his platform to drive meaningful societal change.

Both contenders competed fiercely in the ‘Force For Social Good’ category, alongside prominent figures such as Nigeria’s leading health influencer Aproko Doctor, humanitarian Osita Popcorn, philanthropist Adepeju Olukokun of the Kokun Foundation, and dance choreographer Seyi Oluyole, renowned for her humanitarian efforts.

The tension at the awards ceremony was palpable as the nominees were introduced. Videos circulating online captured the audience’s fervor and anticipation, particularly when VeryDarkMan’s name was announced, sparking enthusiastic applause and high expectations.

However, in a surprising twist that left many stunned, the announcer declared Tunde Onakoya as the winner of the ‘Force For Social Good’ award, amidst audible gasps and mixed reactions from attendees and online viewers alike.

While Onakoya’s achievement undoubtedly impressed the judges and audience, the decision raised eyebrows among fans of VeryDarkMan, who believed his impactful activism deserved the accolade.

The 2024 Trendupp Awards continued to highlight the dynamic influence of social media personalities and their contributions to society, while also igniting debates over the criteria used in awarding social activism in the digital age.
