Chakwera Concedes Defeat to Mutharika in Malawi Presidential Election

Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has conceded defeat to his predecessor, Peter Mutharika, following last week’s presidential election, which was largely shaped by economic hardship and fuel shortages. In a national address on Wednesday, Chakwera, 70, acknowledged Mutharika’s insurmountable lead and pledged a peaceful transfer of power, saying he respects the will of the people and the constitution. While final results are yet to be officially announced, early figures show Mutharika leading by a wide margin in what had been expected to be a tightly contested race.
