Canada PM Says Military Participation in Iran War Not Ruled Out

March 5, 2026

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he cannot categorically rule out Canada’s military participation in the escalating conflict involving Iran.

Carney remarked on a joint appearance with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Canberra as part of his official visit to Australia. His trip has been overshadowed by the expanding Middle East war triggered by a major United States–Israeli strike on Iran, which reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

Responding to questions about possible Canadian involvement, Carney described the scenario as hypothetical but stated that participation could not be completely ruled out. He affirmed that Canada would stand by its allies and prioritise the defence of its citizens.

Although Carney had earlier described the US-Israeli strikes as inconsistent with international law, he reiterated Canada’s longstanding position supporting efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He characterised the situation as another indication of strains within the international order and renewed his call for de-escalation.

The visit to Australia forms part of Carney’s broader Asia-Pacific tour aimed at diversifying Canada’s partnerships and reducing reliance on the United States. In an address to Australia’s parliament, he urged so-called “middle powers” such as Canada and Australia to collaborate in shaping emerging global rules rather than allowing dominant powers to dictate them.

Carney emphasised deeper cooperation between the two countries in areas including defence, artificial intelligence and the development of rare earth minerals. He warned that without coordinated action, middle powers risk being squeezed between major global players.

The Canadian leader has had a strained relationship with US President Donald Trump, who has previously threatened trade measures and made controversial remarks about Canada’s sovereignty. Carney has also cautioned that the US-led global governance system is undergoing significant disruption.
