The decision was unveiled during CAF’s executive committee meeting held on Friday.
For the 2025 AFCON, the tournament will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Morocco will also host the 2024 WAFCON, rescheduled to run from July 5 to July 26, 2025.
Motsepe acknowledged the substantial growth of women’s football in Africa and expressed optimism for the upcoming WAFCON in Morocco, foreseeing a successful event.
He was quoted by CAFonline stating, “I am also impressed by the enormous growth of Women’s Football in Africa and I am expecting the CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024 to be immensely successful.”
Regarding the delayed announcement of AFCON 2025 dates, Motsepe cited the complexity of negotiations with various stakeholders amidst the international and domestic football calendars.
“The announcement of the dates of the CAF AFCON Morocco 2025 took much longer than expected, as there were complex and at times challenging discussions with various interested parties, in the light of the extensive International and Domestic Match Calendars,” he explained.
Motsepe reaffirmed CAF’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of African players, particularly those competing in clubs across Europe and worldwide.
This commitment includes navigating the intricate scheduling requirements to ensure optimal participation and representation at continental tournaments.
The executive committee meeting concluded with the formalization of these tournament dates, setting the stage for meticulous preparations towards hosting successful and competitive editions of WAFCON and AFCON in Morocco.
