Biden Stands Firm on Ukraine Defense at NATO Summit Amid Leadership Test
President Joe Biden has reaffirmed his commitment to defending Ukraine against Russia’s invasion at the NATO summit in Washington on Tuesday, leveraging the global platform to assert his leadership amid domestic and international scrutiny.
Amid concerns about his fitness for office, Biden, 81, aimed to pivot attention from recent controversies during this critical policy speech.
“Putin wants nothing less, nothing less, than Ukraine’s total subjugation… and to wipe Ukraine off the map,” Biden declared, referring to the Russian president in his welcome address to NATO member states. “Ukraine can and will stop Putin.”
Meanwhile, speaking from the historic setting of the federal hall where the NATO treaty was signed, Biden emphasized the alliance’s unprecedented strength and unity as his speech underscored NATO’s pivotal role in global security, bolstered by a backdrop of solemnity provided by the U.S. Marine Corps band.
“Today NATO is stronger than it’s ever been in its history,” Biden proclaimed, highlighting the alliance’s unity and strength.
