Benue Rules Out Mpox Outbreak, Confirms Suspected Case as Chickenpox

July 27, 2026

The Benue State Government has ruled out an Mpox outbreak in Korinya Community, Konshisha Local Government Area, after investigations showed that a suspected case was actually chickenpox.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Paul Ogwuche, said the case was assessed by the state’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, Epidemiology Unit and Disease Surveillance team, which found no evidence of Mpox infection.

He explained that two adults who experienced fever and widespread skin rashes with blister-like lesions had sought treatment at a private health facility and were already recovering before the investigation team arrived.

According to the commissioner, the symptoms were more consistent with chickenpox, as the patients showed signs of recovery, had no lesions on the palms, soles or mouth, and had no known contact with confirmed or suspected Mpox cases.

The state government assured residents that health authorities would continue monitoring the situation and strengthening disease surveillance across Benue.
