Bangladesh Court Jails Ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in Corruption Case
A Bangladesh court has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her niece, UK lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, to prison terms over corruption linked to a government land project in Dhaka.
In a ruling delivered on Monday, the Special Judge’s Court-4 sentenced Hasina, who is currently in exile, to 10 years in jail for illegally acquiring property for herself and family members through abuse of power. Siddiq, a member of the UK’s governing Labour Party, was sentenced to four years for her role in the same case. The court also handed seven-year jail terms to Siddiq’s siblings, Azmina and Radwan Mujib. The latest verdict comes ahead of Bangladesh’s February 12 elections, which will be held under an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Hasina’s Awami League party has been barred from participating in the polls, further intensifying political tensions in the country.
