Atiku, Obi, Kwankwaso Headline National Democracy Rally Ahead of June 12
In anticipation of Nigeria’s upcoming Democracy Day on June 12, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside prominent figures such as Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is slated to headline a national democracy rally in Lagos.
Organized by The Patriots, a group of influential Nigerian leaders, in collaboration with the June 12 Pro Democracy Movement, the event aims to advocate for a “people’s constitution” while honoring the legacy of late Chief MKO Abiola and other heroes of the country’s democratic struggle.
June 12 holds significant historical importance in Nigeria, symbolizing the restoration of democracy in 1999. This date marks the day in 1993 when Abiola’s presidential election victory was unjustly annulled.
Previously, Democracy Day was observed on May 29, but Lagos and other South West states celebrated June 12 as Abiola Day. This year’s event, however, promises to be a significant national rally advocating for a people-driven constitution under the theme “Securing the Future of Nigeria through a Democratic People’s Constitution.”
The rally will feature speeches from notable personalities such as Lagos State Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu and former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku. Additionally, figures like Dr. Olisa Agbakoba SAN, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and Senator Shehu Sanni are expected to contribute to discussions on constitutional reform.
Though Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka was initially set to deliver the keynote address, he’s been replaced by former Ekiti State Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi and June 12 Activist Col. Umar Dangiwa, who will address the theme of the event.
Other key participants and speakers include Prof. Pat Utomi, Barr. Femi Falana SAN, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, and Amb. Nkoyo Toyo, among many others, reflecting a diverse range of perspectives on democratic reform.
The program will also include a roll call of honors for individuals who have contributed to Nigeria’s democratic journey.
A motorcade procession from Alausa to the residence of Chief MKO Abiola will conclude the event, where prayers and tributes will be offered in remembrance of democracy’s champions.
