Armed Attack at South Sudan Gold Mine Leaves 73 Dead

March 31, 2026

Juba, March 31, 2026 – A deadly attack at a gold mine near Jebel Iraq in Central Equatoria, South Sudan, claimed the lives of 73 people on Saturday, with at least 25 others injured. Some residents reportedly fled the area, and authorities have warned that the death toll may rise as searches for missing persons continue.

Vice President James Wani Igga stated that the group behind the assault has not yet been identified and confirmed that an official investigation will be launched. He also announced plans to strengthen security at mining sites and commercial centres.

Governor Charles Madut of Northern Bahr el Ghazal condemned the attack, calling the violence against innocent civilians unacceptable and urging that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
