Adamawa Governor Ahmadu Fintiri Defects to APC
Ahmadu Fintiri has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation over his political future. He announced on Friday in a 14-minute statewide broadcast from his governor’s office, declaring that he and his entire cabinet, along with PDP officials, were joining the APC in the developmental interest of Adamawa State.
Immediately following the broadcast, PDP flags were removed from the governor’s office and across the Government House. Fintiri said the defection was guided by the long-term stability, development, and prosperity of the state. He stressed that all 226 wards, 21 local government areas, elected and appointed officials, and political structures would transition to the APC, urging supporters to register and actively participate in the party.
Fintiri highlighted that the decision came after consultations with a wide spectrum of Adamawa residents and was intended to align the state politically with the national government and support the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, focusing on social welfare, infrastructure, housing, and inclusive economic development.
The Adamawa State chairman of the Commissioners’ Forum, Aloysius Babadoke, confirmed that all state commissioners had joined the APC alongside the governor. Fintiri was registered in the APC with membership card number 001.
Before his defection, 15 of the 16 PDP members of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, including the Speaker Bathiya Wesley, also moved to the APC. Rumours of Fintiri’s defection had circulated since 2024 and gained momentum following President Tinubu’s recent visit to Adamawa State.
