Federal Government Calls for Renewed Commitment to Road Safety Strategy

The Federal Government has urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other stakeholders to intensify efforts toward the full implementation of the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy, amid growing concerns over rising fatalities on the nation’s roads.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, speaking in Abuja at the FRSC’s 8th Annual Lecture Series, highlighted the disturbing rate of road traffic deaths across the country. He noted that despite progress in road safety management, Nigeria still faces considerable challenges that require urgent attention from government agencies, the private sector, and civil society.
Shettima, who chairs the National Road Safety Advisory Council, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to President Bola Tinubu’s pledge of making the National Road Safety Strategy a reality. He described road safety as a collective responsibility and stressed the need for indigenous solutions while leveraging international partnerships to address the problem.
The Vice President commended the FRSC for its innovation and contributions to safer road initiatives, adding that the Annual Lecture Series provides a vital platform for reflection and comparison of local efforts with global best practices.
He further pointed to the government’s support for road safety through investments in infrastructure, consistent maintenance, and expansion of the nation’s highway networks.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, observed that the lecture series has become an important avenue for dialogue on road safety and transportation management. He noted that with Nigeria’s rapid urbanisation, strengthening partnerships and building local systems are critical to protecting lives on the roads.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, explained that the lecture series was designed to deepen discourse on road safety management in light of emerging transportation challenges.
Delivering the keynote address, Saul Billingsley, Executive Director of the London-based Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) Foundation, recognised the FRSC as a major player in the global road safety community.
