Kano Reaffirms Partnership with UNESCO, Korea on Vocational Education

The Kano State Government has restated its commitment to collaborate with UNESCO and the Republic of Korea on the Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR III) project, which focuses on strengthening technical and vocational education.
The assurance was given during a meeting between the state’s Ministry of Education and the project’s technical team in Kano. The session reviewed reports on crop value chains and institutional capacity assessments, to position the state to maximise the benefits of the initiative.
According to the Ministry, the project aligns with the administration’s policy of empowering youths with practical, market-relevant skills that promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation. Officials explained that the programme goes beyond education, targeting youth empowerment, improved livelihoods, and sustainable economic growth.
The BEAR III project, supported by UNESCO and the Korean government, is designed to equip young people with technical and generic skills through a strengthened Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) system. Updates presented at the meeting included the completion of needs assessments across all technical colleges, a seminar on enhancing work-based learning and apprenticeships in agriculture and technology, and a roundtable on career guidance and counselling.
Stakeholders from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) also participated, stressing the importance of developing curricula tailored to Kano’s economic strengths, particularly in irrigation and agro-processing.
The state government expressed confidence that the collaboration would strengthen technical colleges, boost agricultural productivity, and create opportunities for young people to access decent jobs while driving sustainable economic development.
