Warri-Itakpe Train Service Resumes Following Accident

The Federal Government has confirmed the resumption of the Warri-Itakpe train service starting Monday, following a recent accident at the Major Gen. David Ejor rail station.
The announcement came after a thorough inspection conducted by officials, aimed at ensuring the safety and readiness of the rail route.
Minister of Transportation, Senator Ahmed Alkali, conveyed the government’s assurance during an inspection at the Agbor-Abraka rail station on Sunday.
Represented by acting Permanent Secretary Mr. Pius Oteh, the Minister emphasized the restoration of normal operations and the completion of necessary repairs on the affected track.
“Our first observation is to see that normalcy has been restored,”acting Permanent Secretary Mr. Pius Oteh, “The NRC [Nigeria Railway Corporation] has promptly addressed the operational issue following the accident on Thursday night, ensuring that the railway infrastructure is secure for public use.”
Acknowledging the critical role of the Warri-Itakpe railway in Nigeria’s national transportation framework, Minister Alkali expressed gratitude that the incident did not result in any casualties.
He commended the NRC for its swift response and affirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining railway safety and efficiency.
“We are happy to announce that operations will resume tomorrow, Monday,” Mr. Oteh confirmed. “Efforts to expand and enhance our railway services, including extending the line to Abuja, are actively underway.”
Addressing concerns about security along railway routes, the Minister assured the public of ongoing efforts by security agencies to safeguard passengers and railway facilities.
He encouraged continued use of the train service, highlighting collaborative efforts to mitigate risks and ensure safe travel.
During the inspection, Managing Director of NRC, Mr. Freeborn Okhiria, urged residents of Delta State to take ownership of railway facilities as a collective responsibility to enhance security measures.
He underscored the NRC’s commitment to expanding service capacity despite operational challenges.
“The incidents experienced are primarily man-made issues,” Mr. Okhiria noted, emphasizing the corporation’s dedication to expanding service capacity and improving security protocols.
