Kwara MOWA Partners UNFPA on Capacity Building for GBV Management

March 5, 2026

The Kwara State Ministry of Women Affairs has partnered with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) to strengthen the capacity of its staff on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) management using a survivor-centred approach.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Chief Opeyemi Oluwakemi Afolashade, disclosed this during a meeting with UNFPA officials at the ministry. She commended the agency for its continued support and sought further collaboration to enhance staff efficiency in handling GBV cases across the state.

Afolashade noted that the state government has put several mechanisms in place to address GBV, including the inauguration of a 21-man committee, the establishment of a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), provision of shelters for survivors, and the setting up of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Teams in Ilorin West, Ifelodun, and Moro Local Government Areas. She stressed the need for sustained capacity building to align the state’s response framework with global best practices.

The commissioner also expressed concern over the situation in Woro Community in Kaiama Local Government Area, stating that women and children remain the most vulnerable in crisis situations. She called for increased protection and psychosocial support for affected groups in the community.

Speaking at the meeting, the Kwara State Sexual Reproductive Health Specialist of UNFPA, Mrs. Gloria Enueze, lauded the state government’s efforts in safeguarding women and children. She assured that the agency would continue to support survivors of the Woro incident and help amplify the ministry’s work at the international level.

Similarly, UNFPA Humanitarian Analyst, Dr. Danladi Idris, emphasized the importance of training staff on GBV case management, including understanding GBV components, mapping, and managing social risk factors. He highlighted the need to apply gender-sensitive approaches to ensure appropriate support for women and children, particularly during emergencies.
