Rear Admiral Idi Abbas Assumes Office as Naval Chief, Vows Crackdown on Oil Theft and Maritime Crimes
The new Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Idi Abbas, officially assumed office on Thursday, pledging to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security and intensify the fight against crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other maritime crimes threatening the nation’s economy.
Speaking during the handover ceremony at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja, Rear Admiral Abbas, the 23rd Chief of Naval Staff, acknowledged that the nation’s waters remain plagued by illegal activities such as sea robbery, crude oil theft, unregulated fishing, and drug trafficking — all of which undermine national security and economic growth.
He outlined key priorities for his tenure, including enhancing fleet capability through aggressive renewal and technology deployment, improving personnel training and welfare, and strengthening collaboration with other security and regional agencies.
Abbas described his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as a privilege and vowed to serve with integrity and dedication. He also commended his predecessor, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Nkechukwokala, for his visionary leadership and contributions to the Navy’s development.
Reaffirming his commitment to discipline, professionalism, and accountability, the naval chief assured Nigerians that the Navy will remain resolute in safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain and advancing the blue economy.
