ASUU Suspends Two-Week Warning Strike
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its two-week warning strike following progress in negotiations with the Federal Government.
The union’s President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, announced the suspension at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) held between October 21 and 22, 2025.
Piwuna said the decision was reached after reviewing the outcomes of meetings held with the Federal Government negotiation team led by Yayale Ahmed, where discussions on the draft renegotiated 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement resumed.
He stated that although the objectives of the warning strike were not fully achieved, meaningful progress had been made, prompting the union to suspend the action. ASUU, however, gave the government one month to address all outstanding issues or risk a resumption of the strike without further notice.
The union commended the intervention of the Senate Committees on Tertiary Education, TETFund, and Labour, as well as the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, describing their efforts as promising toward reaching an amicable resolution.
ASUU expressed appreciation to students, parents, and other Nigerians for their support and understanding throughout the period of the warning strike.
