National Orientation Agency Director Links Family Stability to National Security

September 22, 2025

The Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, has emphasized the crucial role of family stability in enhancing national security and upholding moral values.

Speaking at the opening of Haske Biyu 2025 at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, Issa-Onilu described the family as the foundation of citizenship, where values such as discipline, respect, empathy, and responsibility are nurtured. He noted that children raised in stable homes guided by love, structure, and accountability are more likely to grow into patriotic citizens committed to peace and order. Conversely, those from broken or dysfunctional families are often more vulnerable to delinquency, drug abuse, cybercrime, cultism, and violent extremism, which contribute directly to the country’s security challenges.

The NOA boss emphasised that addressing national security requires looking beyond military strength to the social fabric of the nation, highlighting the family as a critical frontline in shaping responsible citizens. He commended AFCSC for adopting the theme “Family and National Security,” describing it as both timely and visionary.

Issa-Onilu outlined the role of NOA in promoting national values through civic education, grassroots community engagements, media campaigns, and school-based programmes across the 774 local government areas. He also referenced the National Values Charter, which he described as a binding social contract between the government and citizens.

The DG further called for the urgent development of a national parenting framework that would be culturally grounded and accessible, to equip parents in raising responsible and civic-minded children. He also canvassed reforms in the school curriculum to incorporate value reorientation, civic responsibility, and digital citizenship. In addition, he stressed the need for social and security policies to be better aligned to provide families with social protection, livelihood support, and psychosocial resources necessary to remain stable and functional.
