Zimbabwe Coach Optimistic About Beating Nigeria in 2026 World Cup Qualifiers
Ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Zimbabwe’s coach Michael Nees remains optimistic that the Warriors can turn their fortunes around. Speaking to FARpost, Nees expressed confidence that the team could still qualify, focusing on the crucial matches against Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Cheetahs of Benin in March as key to their hopes.
Nees emphasized that while the situation looks challenging, it is far from hopeless. He acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the availability of players, particularly in December, and stressed the importance of having clarity on when players would be available for selection. Zimbabwe’s squad is made up of players from three different groups: those playing outside Africa, those in South Africa, and those in Zimbabwe itself.
The coach noted that proper planning for these matches is essential, which can only happen if the team knows the availability of its players in advance. Nees emphasized the need for all stakeholders to work together to improve the team’s chances and steer the Warriors towards a successful qualification campaign.
Currently, in last place in their group, Nees highlighted that selecting players who are match fit will be critical. He stressed the importance of having players who have played at least three or four league matches, which will be essential for the team’s performance in the upcoming qualifiers.
