University of Ibadan Students to Protest After 7-Day Ultimatum to Federal Government Over Blackout

The University of Ibadan students’ union is preparing for a peaceful demonstration following the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum given to the federal government regarding the prolonged blackout at the University College of Medicine (UCH), Ibadan. The union, led by president Aweda Bolaji, has announced that the demonstration will take place on Wednesday, January 22, starting at 7 a.m. at the main gate of UCH.
In a statement, Aweda emphasized the urgency of the situation, highlighting the ongoing blackout in the University College Hospital and its impact on students, particularly those in Alexander Brown Hall and Ayodele Falase Postgraduate Hall, who have endured the power outage for 80 days. The students have called on the government to take immediate action to resolve the issue.
The demonstration, which will start at UCH, will proceed to the Secretariat as part of the students’ demand for action. The union has invited fellow students and the public to join in the peaceful protest to show solidarity with those affected by the blackout and to press for a swift resolution.
The student body’s protest follows a series of other grievances from the university, including protests over tuition fee hikes and power rationing. With the blackout issue still unresolved, the students hope the demonstration will draw attention to their plight and prompt the federal government to take immediate steps to restore power to the affected halls.
