Uganda Confirms New Outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus in Kampala

Uganda has confirmed an outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease in the capital, Kampala, after the first patient, a nurse at Mulago Referral Hospital, died on January 29. The nurse had sought treatment at various facilities, including Mulago, after developing fever-like symptoms, but ultimately succumbed to multi-organ failure at the hospital. Post-mortem samples confirmed the presence of the Sudan strain of Ebola.
The highly contagious disease, transmitted through contact with infected bodily fluids, causes symptoms such as headache, vomiting blood, muscle pain, and bleeding. This marks a new outbreak after Uganda’s last one, which was declared over in January 2023 following nearly four months of containment efforts, during which 55 people, including six health workers, lost their lives.
