Tyla Breaks Beyoncé’s Streaming Record with Her Debut Album
South African singer Tyla has made history by breaking Beyoncé’s record for the most-streamed album by a Black female artist in 2024.
Her debut album, titled Tyla, surpassed Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter, accumulating an impressive 1.565 billion streams on Spotify, narrowly edging out the previous record holder by just one million streams. This milestone has not only made Tyla the most-streamed album by a female African artist but also solidified Tyla’s place in music history.
One of the key drivers behind Tyla’s success is her hit single “Water,” which has contributed significantly to the album’s remarkable streaming numbers. The track, which has close to a billion streams on Spotify, also made waves at the 66th Annual Grammy Awards, winning the first-ever Best African Music Performance category. This recognition further bolstered Tyla’s standing in the global music scene.
Despite her record-breaking achievements, Tyla’s album, including its deluxe edition, was notably absent from the 67th Grammy nominations, a surprising omission given her immense popularity and critical success. Nonetheless, Tyla remains undeterred by the snub and continues to receive widespread acclaim for her work.
In 2024, Tyla stands as the most-awarded African artist, having accumulated 20 prestigious awards. These include 1 Grammy, 3 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs), 2 BET Awards, 1 MTV Video Music Award (VMA), and numerous others across various platforms, highlighting her versatile talent and influence in both African and global music markets.
