Trump Signs Executive Order to End Birthright Citizenship

United States President Donald Trump has signed an executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship, a right enshrined in the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court for more than 125 years.

The order, issued Monday, directs federal agencies to halt the issuance of passports, citizenship certificates, and other documentation to children born on U.S. soil under specific circumstances. It applies to those born to parents who are undocumented immigrants, temporary visa holders, or individuals without legal permanent residency.

“As commander in chief, I have no higher responsibility than to defend our country from threats and invasions, and that is what I’m going to do,” Trump said, defending his decision. The executive order mandates implementation within 30 days but is already facing fierce opposition from legal and advocacy groups.

The 14th Amendment clearly states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” Critics argue that Trump’s order contradicts this constitutional guarantee.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) swiftly filed a lawsuit, labeling the move unconstitutional. Advocacy groups argue that the president lacks the authority to unilaterally reinterpret the 14th Amendment, and many experts predict the legal battle will escalate to the Supreme Court.

This latest action is part of a series of immigration-related executive orders from Trump’s administration. The president also authorized officials to “repel, repatriate, or remove” migrants at the southern border, citing public health and national security concerns. Trump described these measures as necessary to counter an “invasion” of migrants, invoking extraordinary presidential powers to suspend certain asylum laws.

Legal scholars have raised alarms about the far-reaching implications of the order, which effectively suspends adherence to existing U.S. asylum laws. Critics warn that such moves could erode the constitutional framework and set a dangerous precedent.

The decision comes as Trump continues to shape his administration’s immigration and border policies, which remain a cornerstone of his agenda.

This action has sparked nationwide debates about the limits of executive power, the interpretation of constitutional rights, and the future of U.S. immigration law. The legal and political battle over this order is expected to dominate headlines in the months ahead.
