Trade Union Congress Condemns Fuel Price Hike, Warns of Worsening Poverty Among Workers
The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has strongly condemned the recent increase in the pump price of petroleum products, warning that the move will exacerbate poverty among Nigerian workers.
In a statement released on Wednesday, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo called on the Federal Government to “immediately reverse these decisions, implement policies to strengthen the naira, and take decisive actions to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.”
The TUC criticized the hike as a decision made “without consultation with key stakeholders,” showing a disregard for the welfare of the Nigerian people, particularly the working class, who are most affected by such policies.
“The sudden hike in fuel and electricity costs will only exacerbate these challenges, leading to further hardship and potential social unrest,” Osifo said. He called for the government to “rescind these decisions, promote policies that will strengthen the naira, and take decisive steps to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.”
The Trade Union Congress’ statement emphasized the urgent need for the government to act swiftly to restore public confidence and prevent further deterioration in the living conditions of its citizens.
“The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria remains committed to defending the rights and interests of Nigerian workers and will continue to advocate for policies that promote social justice, fair wages, and a decent work environment,” Osifo added.
The union also expressed its concern over the recent 250 percent increase in electricity tariffs, arguing that access to electricity is essential for the survival of the poorest in society. It condemned the timing and scale of the increases, questioning why ordinary citizens should bear the brunt of the government’s policies.
“Why does it have to be the common Nigerians bearing all the pains of the high cost of living while those in power enjoy increased allocation and affluence?” the TUC asked in its statement.
The Trade Union Congress’ strong stance reflects growing frustration among Nigeria’s labor unions over the economic challenges facing the country, and it warns of potential social unrest if the government fails to act promptly to address the concerns of its citizens.
