Tinubu Sets Up Peace Committee to Tackle Benue Killings

President Bola Tinubu has established a high-level peace committee, including former governors, traditional rulers, and federal officials, to address the ongoing violence in Benue State following a deadly attack in Yelewata community that left nearly 200 people dead.
At a town hall meeting in Makurdi, Tinubu emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts, stakeholder engagement, and synergy with neighboring Nasarawa State to restore peace. He ordered immediate arrests of the attackers and directed security and intelligence agencies to enhance surveillance. The President also urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to allocate land for ranching and called for blood donations to support victims receiving treatment. Local and international voices, including Amnesty International, Pope Francis, and the Northern Elders Forum, have condemned the killings, describing the situation as a humanitarian crisis driven by impunity, land grabbing, and political neglect.
