Tax bill Reforms: Ex- Governor Lamido, Galadima Raise Concerns Over Anti-North Policies

Former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, particularly the rumored taxation on inheritance, calling it a violation of Islamic principles.
Lamido argued that Islamic law explicitly prohibits taxing inheritance, as the Quran mandates its fair distribution among heirs and prioritizes debt settlement. This opposition follows clarifications by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms, who stated that inheritance tax has been abolished in Nigeria since 1996 and is not included in the proposed reforms.
Lamido also criticized Tinubu’s economic policies, including the abrupt removal of fuel subsidies, urging a more inclusive and consultative leadership approach to restore trust. Veteran northern politician Buba Galadima echoed these concerns, warning of potential political repercussions if the reforms are implemented, particularly given the North’s electoral influence. Meanwhile, the Ekiti State Government has expressed optimism about the reforms, highlighting their potential to boost state revenue and development, especially through Value Added Tax (VAT) adjustments, as outlined in the state’s 2025 budget.
