Suspected Gunman Shot Dead by German Police Near Israeli Consulate in Munich
A suspected gunman was shot dead by German police near the Israeli consulate and a Nazi history museum in Munich, as confirmed by Bavaria state’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. local time on Thursday in the Karolinenplatz area, one of Munich’s central districts. The individual, armed with a long-barreled gun, was confronted by police after he allegedly fired at them.
The shooting took place on the anniversary of the 1972 Munich Olympics attack, where Palestinian Black September militants killed 11 Israeli athletes. German authorities have indicated that the suspect, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, died after exchanging gunfire with police.
Meanwhile, the German Interior Minister, Nancy Faeser, described the incident as serious but refrained from speculating on the motive or background as she emphasized that protecting Jewish and Israeli facilities remains a top priority as the police advised the public to steer clear of the scene.
