Stampede: Police Release Six Suspects in Ibadan Incident
The Oyo State Police Command has released six individuals who were detained in connection with the stampede that occurred during a children’s carnival at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, on December 18, 2024.
The tragic incident had earlier led to the arrest of eight suspects, including notable individuals such as Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, an estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, and the school principal, Fasasi Abdulahi. Others apprehended were Olowola Oluwa Tosin, Genesisi Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisoloja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimileyin.
According to a statement released by the police last week and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, the arrests were part of efforts to determine the circumstances leading to the stampede.
However, sources revealed to DAILY POST that six of the suspects were freed from the custody of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Iyaganku, Ibadan, on Monday night. Those released include Olowola Oluwa Tosin, Genesisi Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisoloja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimileyin.
“The principal and two others remain in custody,” the source confirmed, adding, “We saw them when they released the six suspects.”
The release of the six suspects has sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some questioning the criteria for their release while the principal and others remain detained.
The police are yet to provide an update on the status of the investigation or the specific roles of those still in custody.
As the community awaits further details, the incident has heightened concerns over safety and the organization of public events, particularly those involving children.
