Speaker Abbas Urges Proactive Action Against Escalating Cybersecurity Threats
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has called for urgent and strategic measures to combat the growing cybersecurity threats facing Africa.
Speaking at the 4th Live Hacking Cybersecurity Conference in Abuja on Monday, Abbas, represented by Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Olajide, Chairman of the House Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology, and Cybersecurity, emphasized the need for a robust defense strategy to safeguard Africa’s digital infrastructure. The conference, themed “141 Servers Down: A Call for Proactive Defense Strategy,” brought together experts and stakeholders to address pressing cybersecurity challenges.
Highlighting the significance of the conference theme, Olajide stated, “The incident of ‘141 Servers Down’ serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within our digital systems and the devastating impact cyberattacks can have on critical infrastructure, financial systems, and public services.”
Abbas expressed alarm over the continent’s escalating cyber threats, noting that cybercrime cost Africa over $4 billion in 2023, with Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya being the most targeted nations. He warned that these figures reflect more than just economic losses, as they undermine trust, disrupt businesses, and threaten national security.
The Speaker reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ commitment to legislative efforts that protect the nation’s digital economy and critical infrastructure. He called for a comprehensive framework to address these threats, stressing the importance of enacting supportive legislation, enhancing funding for cybersecurity projects, and ensuring accountability in their implementation.
“Our legislative agenda prioritizes securing the digital ecosystem. We are determined to advance bills that safeguard against cyber risks while fostering digital transformation,” Olajide said on Abbas’s behalf.
The Speaker urged stakeholders to adopt a proactive approach to cybersecurity, emphasizing collective responsibility in protecting Africa’s digital future. He praised the conference organizers for fostering dialogue and innovation, encouraging participants to act on the insights gained.
The event featured live hacking demonstrations, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, attracting cybersecurity professionals, government officials, and private sector representatives.
