South Korea and United States Begin Key Trade Talks Amid Tariff Tensions

South Korea’s acting president Han Duck-soo expressed hope that this week’s trade talks with the United States would lead to a mutually beneficial outcome, as officials from both countries prepare to meet in Washington on April 24. The discussions, requested by the United States, come amid a 90-day pause on newly imposed 25% tariffs, which still affect the auto and steel sectors. South Korea’s Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok and Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun will join U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, to explore possible tariff exemptions or reductions and broader trade cooperation.
