Senate President: Nigeria’s Democracy Reclaimed Through Sacrifice

June 13, 2025

The leadership of the National Assembly, during a joint sitting marking Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day, reaffirmed its commitment to delivering democratic dividends and called on President Tinubu to make the State of the Nation address an annual event at the parliament. Senate President Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen hailed Tinubu as a symbol of democratic struggle, with Akpabio praising his historic presence in the chamber as a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s democratic journey. Abbas urged decisive action on power sector reform, renewable energy adoption, and solid minerals development, while pledging that the Assembly would deliver a people-oriented constitution by December 2025, including gender equity and stronger roles for traditional rulers.
