Senate Launches Investigation into Fake News Surrounding Akpabio’s Impeachment
The Senate has initiated an investigation into rumors suggesting a potential impeachment of Senate President,Godswill Akpabio, labeling the claims as fake news.
During a plenary session on Wednesday, the Senate referred the issue to its Committee on Special Duties, instructing the committee to trace the origins of these misleading reports.
In addressing the situation, Akpabio responded to circulating social media speculation that the Department of State Security had taken control of the National Assembly in anticipation of an impeachment move.
Reassuring the public, Akpabio emphasized that the Senate remains stable and that there is no truth to the impeachment rumors as he expressed hope that the public would recognize these reports as unfounded, stating that the chamber is functioning effectively and that the issue of impeachment is not relevant.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Shehu Kaka, committed to investigating the matter and providing a report to the Senate. Furthermore, observations from The PUNCH indicated no unusual security presence at the National Assembly, further debunking claims made by some media outlets regarding heightened security measures. This is not the first time rumors about Akpabio’s impeachment have emerged.
