Senate Forms Committee to Investigate Allegations Against Senator Ashiru Oyelola
The Senate has established a six-member ad-hoc committee to investigate recent allegations against Senator Ashiru Oyelola, who represents Kwara South.
This committee is tasked with summoning the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to clarify the claims made against Ashiru, which include allegations that illicit drugs were found during a raid on his house in Ilorin, Kwara State.
These accusations emerged after Senator Ashiru’s remarks on October 15 during a debate concerning a bill aimed at establishing the National Institute for Drug Awareness and Rehabilitation.
During the debate, he referred to the NDLEA as “the most corrupt and compromised agency,” which he believes prompted the agency to target him personally in a subsequent press statement.
In response to the NDLEA’s statements, Senator Ashiru described the agency’s actions as witch-hunting and asserted that they infringed on his rights as a senator to engage freely in legislative discussions. He accused the NDLEA of resorting to deceptive tactics aimed at intimidating the Senate and stifling open dialogue on important national issues.
Senate President expressed skepticism about the timing of the NDLEA’s allegations, indicating that he would not rush to conclusions. The Senate has decided to await the recommendations of the newly formed ad-hoc committee before taking any further action, with a resolution expected within one week.
