Senate Calls for Urgent Rehabilitation of Dilapidated Roads Nationwide

February 13, 2025

The Senate has urged the Federal Government to approve the rehabilitation of all dilapidated roads across the country and called for the inclusion of the North East in the Super Highway projects. While commending President Bola Tinubu for the N4.2 trillion coastal road initiative, the Senate emphasized the need for equitable distribution of infrastructure projects.

Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje raised concerns that the North East received only N19 billion for two projects despite the massive allocation for road development. He highlighted several critical road networks in dire need of reconstruction, stressing that the region remains the only one excluded from the Super Highway Project, which hinders economic integration.

Other senators debated the necessity of a balanced approach to road infrastructure, with Senator Solomon Adeola clarifying that the coastal road project was not zonal but specific to designated routes, and that N500 billion had been allocated for general road rehabilitation nationwide. Senator Isah Jibril advocated for a long-term strategy to prevent regional neglect, while Senate President Godswill Akpabio stressed the importance of a sustainable road maintenance plan to avoid recurring infrastructural decay.
