Rwanda Reports 27 Cases of Marburg Virus, Nine Deaths Confirmed
The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that Rwanda has confirmed 27 cases of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) and nine associated deaths as of September 30, 2024.
This announcement follows the outbreak declaration by the Rwandan Ministry of Health on September 27. The majority of the confirmed cases involve healthcare workers, highlighting the risks faced by those on the frontlines.
In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health is collaborating with various partners to implement enhanced preventive measures across health facilities as those affected have been isolated for treatment.
Furthermore, the Ministry has urged Rwandans to remain vigilant by practicing good hygiene, including regular handwashing with soap and using sanitizers, to mitigate the risk of transmission. Additionally, Sabin Nsanzimana, the Rwanda’s Minister of Health, will join an Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) press briefing on October 3 to discuss ongoing efforts to combat the Marburg virus.
