Rivers Judicial Service Commission Denies Political Motivation Behind Magistrate George’s Retirement

April 15, 2025

The Rivers Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has clarified that the retirement of Chief Magistrate Ejike King George is unrelated to the political crisis in the state. George, who announced his retirement citing discomfort with the appointment of a quasi-military administration, was compulsorily retired by the Judicial Service Commission for prolonged unauthorized absence from duty. Furthermore, the commission stated that George had been absent without leave from August 2023 to December 2024 and was given the option to retire voluntarily before being forced into retirement in February 2025. The Judicial Service Commission rejected George’s claims of a politically motivated retirement, calling them false and misleading.
