Reps to Donate ₦704.91m Half-Year Salaries to Tinubu for Vulnerable Nigerians
The House of Representatives has announced a donation of ₦704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu to support vulnerable Nigerians facing economic hardship due to the removal of the petrol subsidy. The donation, which represents half of the lawmakers’ salaries over six months, will be officially presented on December 31, 2024.
The decision to contribute a portion of their salaries was made on July 18, following the adoption of a motion moved by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu. During the plenary session, Kalu called for collective sacrifice to address the struggles of ordinary Nigerians, emphasizing that the government’s efforts, while commendable, require support from all stakeholders.
“This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent of our salary for six months,” Kalu said.
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abba commended the lawmakers for their dedication to the initiative and announced the total amount raised. He described the contributions as a testament to the commitment of the House to addressing the needs of the Nigerian people.
“About five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed ₦704,907,578.82,” Abba stated. He further noted that the funds would be handed over to President Tinubu for the exclusive benefit of the vulnerable Nigerians who need it most.
The initiative, which aims to alleviate hunger and provide relief to those most affected by economic reforms, also highlights the House’s solidarity with the Nigerian people. The lawmakers’ gesture is seen as a symbolic commitment to sharing in the sacrifices demanded by the current economic situation.
