Reps Minority Demands Immediate Reversal of Petrol Price Hike
The Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has urgently called for the reversal of the recent increase in petrol prices, warning that the hike will significantly worsen the plight of Nigerians.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the caucus criticized the unilateral decision to raise the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), arguing that it undermines the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness that should guide such impactful decisions.
Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, in a statement titled “Reverse Petrol Prices Now,” urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement immediate measures to address the link between worsening economic conditions and social unrest. The statement reads:
“At a time when the nation is grappling with unprecedented economic challenges, including rising inflation, unemployment, and a depreciating Naira, any further increase in petrol prices will only compound the suffering of the average Nigerian.
“The ripple effects of such a price hike will impact transportation, food, and other essential goods and services, further eroding the already fragile purchasing power of millions and pushing more families into poverty.
“We are deeply concerned that this decision by the NNPC seems to have been made without adequate consultation with relevant stakeholders, including the National Assembly. This unilateral action disregards the principles of transparency, accountability, and fairness, which should guide decisions affecting the lives of our citizens.
“The current dire economic conditions, characterized by rising unemployment, soaring inflation, and widening inequality, have already placed immense pressure on the livelihoods of citizens. This has led to widespread protests, as people demand relief and accountability from those in power. The resulting unrest serves as a stark reminder that economic instability can quickly escalate into broader social and political instability.
“It is crucial for all stakeholders—including government, businesses, and civil society—to collaborate in addressing these economic challenges and restoring stability. The Tinubu administration must address the connection between dire economic conditions and social unrest before the situation deteriorates further. Failure to act could lead to more unrest, with jobless youths taking to the streets and potentially unleashing violence.
“We urge the Federal Government to immediately reverse this unwarranted increase in petrol prices and explore more sustainable measures to stabilize the economy without adding to the burden of the people,” the statement concludes.
