Protest Erupts in Osogbo Over Shooting of Osun Transport Management Chairman
Protests have erupted in Osogbo as members of the Osun State Transport Management System took to the streets following the alleged shooting of their chairman, Wakeel Nurudeen Alowonle, by operatives of the Osun State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad.
The incident occurred on Monday night, reportedly during Alowonle’s arrest for possession of a police pistol and ammunition. However, the Osun State government claimed Alowonle was shot in custody over a domestic dispute, sparking outrage.
Protesters have blocked the expressway at Aregbe Park, causing significant disruptions to traffic. Commercial transportation has been halted, while only a few private vehicles have been allowed through.
“It is tough over here. The road has been blocked, and there’s a need for police presence to prevent things from escalating,” said Muhammad Jamiu, an eyewitness.
The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, condemned the incident, raising concerns about Alowonle’s condition. The government called for an investigation into the actions of the police squad involved.
As tensions rise, the situation underscores growing discontent with law enforcement practices in the state. Security agencies are yet to issue an official response to the allegations or the ongoing protests.
