Federal Government Approves Increase in Retirement Age for Doctors to 65

President Bola Tinubu has approved an increase in the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare workers from 60 to 65 years, a move aimed at addressing brain drain and improving knowledge transfer within the healthcare sector.
The decision, confirmed by Dr. Mannir Bature of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), was presented by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, during a meeting with key stakeholders in the health sector.
The meeting also covered the payment of arrears related to the adjustment of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS), with funds now secured for disbursement. In addition, new tariffs for healthcare services were approved to enhance the financial sustainability of healthcare providers. This policy shift follows extensive discussions and reviews aimed at improving the welfare of healthcare workers in Nigeria.
