President Tinubu Declares National Emergency on Food Security

President Bola Tinubu has declared a national emergency on food security, emphasizing the urgent need for expanded irrigation infrastructure and improved water resource management across Nigeria. Speaking through Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the 6th African Regional Conference on Irrigation and Drainage in Abuja, Tinubu highlighted the country’s 3.1 million hectares of irrigable land and stressed the importance of innovative strategies to boost agriculture and economic resilience. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, outlined achievements under the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project and announced its successor, the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) project, set to enhance water management and food production with World Bank support.
