President Tinubu Celebrates Re-Opening of Warri Refinery as Major Achievement for Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu has expressed his satisfaction with the re-opening of the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), a milestone he believes will further strengthen Nigerians’ confidence in his administration.
He described the restart of the refinery as another significant achievement in 2024, highlighting his government’s commitment to boosting local refining capacity and transforming Nigeria into a hub for downstream industrial activities in Africa. This development follows the successful restart of the 60,000 barrels per day Port Harcourt Refinery in November.
The Warri Refinery, which had been inactive for several years, resumed operations on Monday, marking a key victory for the administration’s efforts to revitalize Nigeria’s oil sector. President Tinubu emphasized that the refinery is now operating at 60% capacity, underscoring that his administration’s plan for energy efficiency and security is on track. He commended the leadership of Mele Kyari and the NNPCL management for their dedication in bringing the refinery back online and restoring Nigeria’s pride as a major oil producer.
The president further praised the efforts of the previous administration, led by President Muhammadu Buhari, which awarded the contract for the rehabilitation of Nigeria’s four state-owned refineries. With the Warri Refinery now operational, President Tinubu expressed confidence that the revitalization of all four refineries will strengthen the nation’s energy sector. He urged NNPCL to continue its work, particularly on the Kaduna Refinery and the second Port Harcourt Refinery, which will contribute to Nigeria’s position as a global energy player.
The WRPC is now focused on producing and storing key products such as Straight Run Kerosene (SRK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and both heavy and light Naphtha. President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to enhancing Nigeria’s energy security and making the country a dominant force in the global oil industry.
