Presidency Demands Bauchi Governor Retract “Inflammatory” Remarks on Tax Reforms
The Presidency has called on Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, to retract his “inflammatory” remarks regarding the Tax Reform Bill, which he described as “anti-northern” and threatening to the unity of Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Mr. Sunday Dare, the Presidency condemned Mohammed’s statement made during a Christmas gathering on December 25, where he warned that the northern region would “show its true colours” in response to the tax reforms. The Presidency emphasized that such remarks do not reflect the collective stance of the North and urged for more constructive dialogue between the Federal Government and state leaders on issues of national importance.
Dare further expressed concern that the governor’s inflammatory rhetoric, including his threat to President Tinubu, was unbecoming of his office and undermined the spirit of collaboration needed to address Nigeria’s challenges. He reminded Mohammed that the North, like other regions, seeks cooperative governance and engagement with the Federal Government. The statement pointed out that Bauchi State had received substantial federal allocations, including N144 billion disbursement, which could be better utilized to address developmental issues and poverty within the state rather than issuing threats.
The Presidency also highlighted that the new tax reforms, which include changes to the Value Added Tax (VAT) distribution and measures to improve revenue collection, are designed to benefit states like Bauchi. The reforms aim to streamline taxation systems, ease the burden on small businesses, and promote agricultural development. It was noted that these reforms are particularly beneficial for the informal sector, which constitutes a significant portion of Bauchi’s economy, and that the new measures are aligned with the government’s broader vision of stimulating growth, attracting investment, and enhancing social services.
In response to the governor’s criticisms, Dare urged that rather than opposing these reforms, Governor Mohammed should focus on improving fiscal management and implementing policies that would allow Bauchi to maximize the benefits of federal initiatives. He emphasized that the path forward for Nigeria lies in unity and constructive engagement, with leaders focusing on the collective good and prioritizing the welfare of their citizens over regional or political interests.
