Police Urge British National Declared Wanted to Surrender
The Nigerian Police High Command has called on Andrew Wynne, a British national declared wanted, to come out of hiding and surrender himself to the authorities. This appeal was made on Tuesday, following allegations that Wynne and his Nigerian collaborator, Lucky Obiyan, were involved in plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The police had declared Wynne and Obiyan wanted on Monday, placing a N20 million bounty on them and accusing them of multiple offenses, including terrorism financing, treasonable felony, cybercrime, subversion, and criminal conspiracy. Wynne has denied all allegations, claiming that he was not informed that he had been labeled a fugitive.
Speaking to journalists at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, Police Spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi dismissed Wynne’s claim that he was not invited by the police before being declared wanted. Adejobi stated that Wynne had been contacted several times but refused to cooperate with the authorities.
“He (Wynne) has been contacted several times. He has been so faceless. We went to invade that bookshop. Has he asked questions? Has he come out? Up till now, he has not shown up. Why is he hiding and speaking from hiding that he has no case to answer?” Adejobi said.
Adejobi challenged Wynne to surrender and face the law, just like his accomplices who have already been charged in court. “We have established an offense or offenses against him, and we have even declared him wanted. His accomplices have been charged in court. Let him come out,” Adejobi urged.
The police spokesperson also rejected Wynne’s suggestion for a Zoom interrogation, stating that it would not be accepted given the severity of the charges against him.
The case has drawn attention due to the serious nature of the allegations and the international dimension of involving a British national. The police continue to insist on Wynne’s surrender, as investigations into the alleged plot to destabilize the Nigerian government are ongoing.
