Police Arrest Naomi ex-wife of Ooni of Ile-Ife, Silekunola Over Ibadan Fatal Stampede
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, following a fatal stampede at a children’s carnival she organised. The tragedy occurred on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
According to a statement by the police spokesperson, Adewale Osifeso, eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. Among them are Silekunola, aged 31, and Fasasi Abdulahi, the 56-year-old principal of the school. Others detained include Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin, with ages ranging from 25 to 52 years.
The stampede claimed the lives of 35 children, while six others remain in critical condition and are receiving medical attention. Osifeso described the incident as a severe tragedy and stated that the case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough investigation led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
“The Oyo State Police Command assures the public that justice will be served accordingly,” the statement read. To ensure peace and security in the area, the police have increased patrols and visible presence around the vicinity of the school. Residents have been urged to remain calm and vigilant, with emergency hotlines provided for immediate assistance.
The Oyo Police Command expressed its condolences to the affected families, stating, “Our thoughts are with all the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy.”
