Philippine Lawmakers Impeach Vice President Sara Duterte

Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has been impeached by the lower house of Congress after 215 out of 306 lawmakers, many allied with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., signed a petition for her removal.
The impeachment, which follows allegations ranging from the misuse of public funds to plotting Marcos’s assassination, now moves to the Senate, where two-thirds of the 24 senators must vote in favor for her to be removed from office. Despite denying all accusations and calling the proceedings a political vendetta, Duterte remains in office during the trial.
Her impeachment comes amid growing tensions between her and Marcos, whose former alliance crumbled after their 2022 election victory, leading to a series of public accusations. Duterte, previously seen as her father Rodrigo Duterte’s political successor, resigned from Marcos’s cabinet in June over allegations of misusing $10.3 million in public funds and has also faced criticism for her handling of the South China Sea dispute. The impeachment vote, taking place just before midterm election campaigning, is expected to have significant political implications ahead of the 2028 presidential race.
