PDP Criticizes Governor Abiodun’s Slow Security Response in Ogun State

January 21, 2025

The Ogun State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized Governor Dapo Abiodun for his perceived passive approach to tackling crime in the state. The party specifically condemned his recent approval to recruit 1,000 additional personnel for the Amotekun Corps, calling the move lackadaisical. Governor Abiodun made the announcement during a passing-out parade for 690 Batch D Amotekun trainees, pledging to enhance state security through this new recruitment. However, the PDP believes this action is too little, too late.

During an interview on Eagle 102.5 FM’s “Frontline” program, Ogun PDP Chairman, Hon. Abayomi Tella, expressed concerns that the governor’s actions are often slow and reactive, rather than proactive. Tella accused Governor Abiodun of mimicking the security measures of other Southwest states without taking independent, meaningful action to address the rising insecurity in Ogun. He pointed out that the governor’s measures were only being introduced after crimes had already been committed in the state.

Tella further criticized the governor’s response to the growing security threat, particularly the influx of bandits from the North-West into the South-West. He noted that other states like Oyo and Ondo had acted swiftly to tackle the issue, while Ogun State had been slow to respond, putting residents’ lives at risk. According to Tella, the governor’s focus on press releases and photo opportunities rather than concrete action has been insufficient in addressing the state’s security challenges.

The PDP leader called for a more serious approach to state security, urging the governor to take real action to protect lives. He emphasized the importance of local security arrangements, especially given Ogun’s strategic location bordering several states, and expressed frustration with the delay in implementing state police. Tella also encouraged the government to embrace constructive criticism as a means to improve policies and ensure the safety of the people.
