Oyebanji, Wike Approve N70,000 Minimum Wage for Ekiti, FCT Workers
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike have approved a new minimum wage of N70,000 for workers under their jurisdictions.
In Ekiti, the new wage will take effect from December 1, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the state government and leaders of the Organised Labour. The agreement covers all categories of workers and pensioners in the state.
The MoU was signed on behalf of the state by Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, Head of Service, and labour leaders representing the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).
Dr. Olomojobi commended Governor Oyebanji for prioritizing workers’ welfare and urged employees to reciprocate by enhancing their commitment to service delivery. “This was a painstaking process. Despite financial constraints, the governor bent forward and backward to accommodate the yearnings of Ekiti workers,” she said.
Labour leaders, including NLC Chairman Comrade Kolapo Olatunde, TUC Chairman Comrade Sola Adigun, and JNC Chairman Comrade Femi Ajoloko, praised the governor’s efforts to secure a favorable agreement for workers.
Similarly, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike approved the new minimum wage for FCT administration staff, along with the payment of three months’ arrears effective from November 2024.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Grace Adayilo, acting Head of Civil Service for the FCT, the minister reiterated his commitment to staff welfare, describing the move as part of efforts to align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The decisions in both jurisdictions are expected to boost morale and service delivery among workers while addressing the rising cost of living.
